The Conciergerie Palace

One of the famous Monuments of Paris, and a place to explore the unique Gothic rooms of a medieval Royal Palace, is The Conciergerie. Earlier it was a Royal Palace, but later on, this place became a revolutionary court and a jail for Marie Antoinette. The Guard’s room and the Hall of the soldiers, which were constructed under the reign of King Philip the Fair, are still intact since the days of the medieval palace. The kitchens also remain intact as they were under the kingdom of King John the Good. 

However, at end of the 14th century, the Kings of France abandoned the palace to settle in Vincennes and Louvre. After that, a certain part of the palace was converted into prison cells and a revolutionary court. After the installation of the revolutionary court, the Conciergerie palace also became one of the places of detention during the French Revolution. The most famous prisoner of the cells was Marie-Antoinette. During the restoration, a memorial chapel got established on the site of her jail. 

UNESCO has designated the Conciergerie Palace as the world heritage site. 

The Sainte-Chapelle

The Sainte-Chapelle is probably the premium royal chapel to be built in France, featuring a truly exceptional collection of stained-glass windows. It was built by Louis IX during the 13th century, at the centre of the Royal Residence. It is built to keep the remnants of the passion of Christ. It is known as the Gem of Rayonnant Gothic architecture because of its uniquely-built design and architecture. It is adorned with an exclusive collection of fifteen glass panes and a rose-shaped window, forming a veritable wall of light.
