Canada Work Permit – How To Apply?

Canada has always been one of the most popular countries for immigration around the world. Being the most attractive destination for immigrants, Working in Canada could also be a dream of many different workers around the world. There is no surprise Why people would love to apply Canada Work Permit. There can be several factors that could be the reason people would like to work in Canada, such as a great working environment, high-income opportunities, and lots of job availability with additional benefits.

Canadian immigration receives thousands of applications each year for a work permit in Canada. The processing time of these applications may vary from case to case depending on the individual case scenario. The most important factor that impacts the processing of your study permit application is your home country (where you are a citizen) and whether you are applying for a work permit in Canada from within Canada or outside Canada.

Processing for a Canada Work Permit

Generally, it takes about 1 to 9 months to process a Canada work permit application by Canadian immigration (Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada). It may take longer than usual to process the work permit application if the application is incomplete. The processing time of your application starts on the day when IRCC receives your complete application. The processing times for open applications may vary depending on the type of application that is submitted to IRCC and the place (inside or outside Canada) where the application is submitted for the work permit.

Factors influencing the processing times of Canada work permit

  • Total number of applications received by IRCC

The processing time of your individual application for a work permit may be influenced by the total number of applications received by IRCC. It may be slower or faster than the average processing time in accordance with the total number of applications. Play example is that IRCC has a backlog of applications, and the processing time for your application may be longer than the average processing times. However, it may be the opposite case; IRCC received fewer applications during that period.

  • Place of filing application

The processing time of the Canada work permit application may be different from the one which is applied from the home country of the applicant and the one applied from within Canada.

  • Document submission

The applicants are expected to make sure they submit a complete application in order to process the application in average processing time. In order to avoid any delays or refusal of the application, you must make sure you submit all the supporting documents and the required form completely to IRCC.

TFWP – Temporary Foreign Work Permit Program

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada  (IRCC) and the Canadian Ministry of Employment and Social Development  (ESDC) govern the program. The program was introduced to help Canadian employers recruit skilled international workers who possess skills for in-demand jobs in Canada and fill in labor market gaps in specific sectors of the labor market.

The program aims at ensuring that the rights of these workers are protected and a safe environment is provided for work under the program. An important element of  TFWP is the assessment of its impact on the labor market. This is a requirement for all temporary foreign workers in Canada.

LMIA – Labour Market Impact Assessment

It is a document that indicates the position you are applying for in Canada was not filled by a local applicant with your employer. The processing of LMIA applications can be complicated. It is the responsibility of your employer to apply for the LMIA for you, but it is advisable to do as much research as possible on the process as you will need a copy of the LMIA  to apply for a work visa. There are also many occupations that do not even require labor market impact assessment. It is generally determined by the cultural and economic benefits that can be achieved by hiring temporary foreign workers in a particular position or industry.

Open Canada Work Permit

The Open Canada Work Permit allows any worker in Canada to work as long as the following conditions are met:

  • The applicant has never been disqualified for failing to meet certain conditions.
  • The work does not include any of the following – erotic dance, escort services, or erotic massages.
Eligibility Of Canada Work Permit

There are several different types of open and closed work permits in Canadian immigration under different programs such as International Mobility Program and the Temporary Foreign Workers Program. All these different kinds of work permits are allotted based on different work requirements and circumstances. In order to determine what type of work permits you require, you need to consider several factors such as your immigration status in Canada, the country of your residence, your place of applying for a work permit ( within or outside Canada), and the skills and qualifications you possess.

In order to check your eligibility for a Canadian work permit, you must complete the online assessment for eligibility. This assessment would help in determining the type of work permit to be applied along with the program under which it shall be applied.

IMP – International Mobility Program

Both open and closed work permits can be applied under the International Mobility Program. Obtaining a work permit under this program does not require a labor market valuation and is often easier and faster as the permit is processed within two weeks.

IEC – International Experience Class

The IEC is intended for young people between the ages of 18 and 30/35 in 37 participating countries who work in Canada and wish to travel. The IEC has three  types of travel and work experience:

  • Working Holiday (Open Work Permit)
  • Young Professionals category
  • International Cooperatives (employer-specific work permit).

PGWP – Post-Graduate Work Permit

International students have the option to apply for a post-graduation work permit. It is a type of open work permit. The international graduates are eligible for such work permits if they have graduated from a Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and wish to temporarily reside in Canada for work. In order to meet the eligibility requirements of the Post graduate work permit, The study program in which the student is enrolled must be at least eight months in duration, and the applicant must have a valid study permit and must comply with all the conditions of the study permit when applying for a work permit.
